Hi Drum Shedders,
Most of us hit the same walls early on. Here are five common beginner mistakes and how to fix them.
1. Playing too fast too soonāØ
Fix: Drop the tempo until everything is clean and relaxed. Speed comes later. I always recommend using only 3 BPM increases with the metronome ā itās a great way to trick your brain!
2. Tight shoulders and handsāØ
Fix: Check in every few minutes. Shake your hands out. Relax your shoulders. Stay looseā¦and, BREATH!
3. Ignoring the metronomeāØ
Fix: Use it more than you want to, especially at slow tempos.
4. Trying to learn too many things at onceāØ
Fix: Pick one groove or rudiment and stay with it for several days.
5. Skipping the basicsāØ
Fix: Strong singles, doubles, and a solid basic groove will take you further than fancy patterns early on.
Most beginners improve faster when they slow down and clean things up.
Keep drumming,
Nicholas
